In 2002, singer Kazu Makino was trampled by her horse. Her facial bones were crushed, requiring complete surgical reconstruction. In the opening track to Blonde Redhead’s Misery Is a Butterfly, Makino reflects on the accident. The lyrics convey her feelings of betrayal at being hurt by something she loves as well as her struggles with the injury. The song’s title references The Elephant Man, which centers around the severely deformed Joseph Merrick. - Taken from Genius
